Cambodian parties to hold talks<\/p>\n
CAMBODIA: Cambodia's three main political parties will meet on
\nFriday to discuss a shaky deal brokered by the revered King
\nNorodom Sihanouk to break a months-long post-election deadlock,
\nofficials said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The octogenarian monarch mediated the deal earlier this month
\nto pave the way for a new coalition government after weeks of
\nwrangling over the results of the July 27 general election in the
\nimpoverished Southeast Asian nation.<\/p>\n
Under the king's formula, Khmer Rouge fighter-turned-prime
\nminister Hun Sen and National Assembly chairman Prince Norodom
\nRanariddh would remain in their posts.<\/p>\n
Opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who has sworn never to join a
\ncoalition led by Hun Sen, head of the dominant Cambodian People's
\nParty (CPP), would become a deputy prime minister or National
\nAssembly vice-chairman.<\/p>\n
The royalist FUNCINPEC party and Sam Rainsy's faction have
\ndemanded economic and political reform as a basis for the talks.
