Cambodia gears for AFTA<\/p>\n
PHNOM PENH (Reuters): Cambodia is committed to cutting tariffs
\nin line with ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) requirements and is
\nmaking progress in reducing reliance on import taxes, Minister of
\nCommerce Cham Prasidh said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Cambodia, which joined the Association of Southeast Asian
\nNations (ASEAN) in April, has 10 years to slash tariffs on most
\ngoods to a maximum five percent in line with the group's free
\ntrade rules.<\/p>\n
\"The goal is to ensure that we lower all the tariff barriers
\nfor all products,\" Cham Prasidh told Reuters at a ministry
\nseminar on AFTA.<\/p>\n
\"We are going to move in the same line as other ASEAN members
\nhave done so far. There would be less and less tariff lines in
\nthe temporary exclusion list and also in the general exception
\nlist,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said Cambodia would this week present ASEAN with details of
\nits tariff reduction plans and detail which items would be on the
\nvarious AFTA lists which enable countries to exclude temporarily
\nitems from the tariff-cut plan.<\/p>\n
Cham Prasidh also said Cambodia was making progress in weaning
\nitself off an over-reliance on import taxes.<\/p>",
