Call to consumers<\/p>\n
People in Indonesia, powerless consumers, are routinely
\nvictimized by fraudulent merchants. Consumers here will get a
\nfair deal only if, and when, they stand up and demand basic
\nrights -- hold the merchants accountable for fraudulent actions.<\/p>\n
Recently I entered the stylish-looking Calvin Klein store
\nlocated at Plaza Indonesia. Hanging in the window was a very
\nlarge sign advertising "20 percent discount on all merchandise".
\nAfter selecting several times and proceeding to the cashier, I
\nwas told that the items which I had selected were not included in
\nthe sale (even though the store did not have any disclaimer
\nexcluding any items). Needless to say, I was furious. I
\nimmediately complained to the store manager, but of course it did
\nnot help, since I was merely a powerless consumer. Losing me and
\nmy purchase meant absolutely nothing to the staff at the Calvin
\nKlein store.<\/p>\n
As an expatriate, I have an alternative: make expensive
\npurchases overseas where I am assured of basic satisfaction in
\nterms of product quality, service, advertising, etc. However,
\nthis does nothing to help the plight of powerless consumers here.
\nCome on, consumers, stand up and demand basic rights from
\nmerchants -- hold them accountable!<\/p>\n
