Call for prayers for East Timor<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Bishops Conference (KWI) called
\non Friday for the community of faith at large to pray for peace
\nin the riot-torn East Timor.<\/p>\n
The KWI's statement, signed by chairman Josef Suwatan and
\nsecretary-general J. Hadiwikarta, also invited people to attend
\non Sunday a national requiem mass.<\/p>\n
\"There is a systematic massacre and forced removal of people
\ncurrently going on in East Timor. Hundreds of East Timorese were
\nshot and killed, including at least four priests and four nuns.<\/p>\n
\"Thousands are being forced to leave the country in a sweeping
\neffort to thin out the population of East Timor,\" the statement
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The statement also said that places which became symbols of
\nhumanity and religiosity -- such as the International Red Cross,
\nmonasteries and even houses of bishops -- had also been attacked.<\/p>\n
\"KWI has, for several times, voiced demands to halt violence
\nin the country and tried to create peace, but brutalities still
\ncontinuously occurred in the country,\" it stated. (ind)<\/p>",
