Call for greater self-reliance<\/p>\n
We are certain that once a new government is formed in the
\nwake of the general session of the People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR), foreign funds and investment will come flowing back in.
\nAfter all, whatever its weaknesses, Indonesia is still a
\nprofitable destination considering its available manpower, large
\ndomestic market and abundant natural resources.<\/p>\n
It must not be forgotten that the main reason foreign
\ninvestors left Indonesia in the recent past was because, in the
\nexisting environment of rampant corruption, the profits that they
\ncould reap were inconsequential compared to the extra
\nexpenditures they had to make. This being the case, the economy
\ncan be expected to begin moving again at the beginning of next
\nyear at the latest. Care must be taken, however, in order that
\nthis does not lead to another cycle of (untoward) developments
\nand another economic breakdown.<\/p>\n
We hope the new government will manage the economy in accord
\nwith the people's condition and the nation's needs. The new
\ngovernment should pursue development by relying primarily on the
\nnation's own strength and resources, since overreliance on
\nforeign loans has already proven to lead to a most fragile
\nnational economy. Even our state-owned companies' enterprises, on
\nwhich we supposedly must depend to repay our debts, have their
\nhands full putting their houses in order.<\/p>\n
