Cak Nur discharged from hospital<\/p>\n

The return home of Nurcholish Madjid from hospital on Monday has
\nnot only rekindled the hope among his admirers that the respected
\nMuslim scholar will soon be active again, but also reflects his
\nstrength in the face of adversity, close friends and associates
\nsay.<\/p>\n
Cak Nur, as the 66-year-old intellectual is popularly known,
\nhad undergone a series of surgeries and medical treatment in
\nIndonesia, China and Singapore before Pondok Indah Hospital in
\nSouth Jakarta discharged him on Monday.<\/p>\n
Rahmat Hidayat, his personal aide, said that Nurcholish only
\nneeded to undergo physiotherapy to regain his physical balance
\nafter having been confined for almost a year in a hospital bed.<\/p>\n
\"He still reads, mostly newspapers and the Koran,\" Rahmat
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Hopefully, his admirers will be able to see him back in
\nseminars and conferences in six months time,\" said Ibnu Soetanto,
\none of Cak Nur's closest friends.<\/p>\n
He added that when being hospitalized, Cak Nur had remained an
\navid reader, regularly devouring several publications such as
\nTime, Newsweek and local newspapers.<\/p>\n
Cak Nur's first medical problems occurred immediately after he
\ncast his ballot in the first round of the presidential election
\non July 5, 2004. He had withdrawn his presidential bid after many
\nof his colleagues advised him not to run for the poll with a
\nticket from the Golkar Party.<\/p>\n
\"Later that afternoon, after he had cast his vote, he said he
\nfelt dizzy and lost his appetite. We rushed him to the hospital,
\nwhere doctors explained that he had liver cirrhosis (CA). His
\nliver had hardened and did not function well,\" said Ibnu
\nSoenanto, another of Cak Nur's close friends.<\/p>\n
Ibnu, who kept watching over Cak Nur during his treatment in
\nJakarta, China and Singapore, said that two days later doctors
\ntold him that Cak Nur had to undergo a liver transplant to save
\nhim.<\/p>\n
\"The decision was made after consultation with experts from
\nPondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta, Cipto Mangunkusumo
\nHospital, and doctors in Japan and Europe,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Ibnu said China is the only country that has a hospital which
\ncould provide a donor on short notice. Pondok Indah Hospital also
\nhad a patient who successfully underwent a liver transplant in
\nChina a few years ago.<\/p>\n
After having had a successful operation at the Taiping
\nPeople's Hospital in Guangdong, Cak Nur underwent three more
\noperations to deal with the effects of the transplant operation.<\/p>\n
After a month in China, Cak Nur was transferred by air
\nambulance to Singapore, where he spent six months to get
\ntreatment for an infection in his stomach cavity.<\/p>\n
\"The wounds he sustained during the operation had to be
\ncleaned. So, he had to be operated on. After that, there was
\nbleeding in his digestive system. So the doctors operated on him
\nagain,\" said Ibnu.<\/p>\n
A doctor at Singapore's National University Hospital, Dede
\nSelamat, praised Cak Nur as \"an unbelievable fighter\", as he
\nmanaged to pass through repeated surgeries with strength and the
\nfull confidence that he would survive. (006)<\/p>",
