Cairo awards young RI painters<\/p>\n

A painting depicting 12 children of all races gathering before
\na sphinx was one of two works by young Indonesians which won
\ngold medals at the 2000 \"Egypt in the Eyes of Children\" global
\ncompetition.<\/p>\n
\"This is my 55th award, national and international,\" Indra
\nKencana, the proud owner said during a ceremony to accept the
\nmedal at Egyptian Ambassador Erzat Saad's residence, on Monday.<\/p>\n
Like the other 10 Indonesian recipients of medals and
\ncertificates on Monday, Indra, a third grader from SMUN 68 high
\nschool in Jakarta, has never been to Egypt.<\/p>\n
So where did the inspiration come from?<\/p>\n
\"I looked at pictures in magazines,\" Indra said.<\/p>\n
Indra who has been accepted to study architect at the Gadjah
\nMada University in Yogyakarta next year, said painting is a mere
\nhobby. \"Although I wouldn't mind turning it into a profession.\"<\/p>\n
The other Indonesian gold medalist was Sisylia Octavia of
\nSurabaya, whose work depicts ancient Egyptian figures.<\/p>\n
\"I visualized it from reading material,\" Sisylia, a third
\ngrader at Ciputra Junior High School, said.<\/p>\n
She, too is accustomed to winning ways, but then, so are her
\nthree younger siblings Fransisca, Grace and Natania.<\/p>\n
\"We've turned our house (in Surabaya) into a gallery, with
\nover 200 paintings from the four girls,\" Farida Wijaya, their
\nproud mother, said. \"We will take some of the works to an
\nexhibition in China next month,\" she added.<\/p>\n
Besides the two gold medals, Ambassador Saad gave four silver
\nmedals and five certificates. Indonesian Minister of Tourism and
\nCulture, I Gede Ardhika, helped in presenting the honors.<\/p>\n
\"The works by the children show a strong knowledge of our
\ncivilization and reflect at the same time their very deep and
\nrich artistic background,\" the ambassador said.<\/p>\n
Reprints of their paintings, using crayons, oil and water
\npaints, were displayed at the lobby of Saad's residence on
\nMonday, while their originals were kept at the Egyptian National
\nCenter for Children Causes in Cairo, which held the competition.<\/p>\n
Indonesia took the most medals in the five-yearly competition.
\nThe winners were announced in mid-year 2001 and it took the
\nEmbassy a while to locate them and bring them all to Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The silver medals went to Aldi Kristanto Jokroasmoro of
\nJakarta, Isabel Mulia Wibisono (Surabaya), Dinda Ameliya
\n(Bandung) and Alexander (Jakarta). The certificates went to Dicky
\nHaqvillah Yabin of Bandung, Florencia Nirmala Wibisono
\n(Surabaya), Hendra Angkajaya (Surabaya) and Astari Shine
\n(Bandung).<\/p>",
