Cable & Wireless, Trikora form venture<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Cable & Wireless Marine of Britain and PT
\nTrikora Lloyd have set up a joint venture company to provide
\nsubmarine cable surveying as well as installation and maintenance
\nservices in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"This is part of our plan to provide marine cable installation
\nand maintenance services for the rapidly growing and increasingly
\nimportant fiber optic telecommunications cable network in this
\ncountry,\" Boedihardjo Sastrohadiwirjo, chief commissioner of the
\njoint venture firm, said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Boedihardjo, who is also the chairman of the Boedihardjo
\nTransport and Shipping Group, the holding company of PT Trikora
\nLloyd, said that the joint venture, called PT MaCaSer Indonesia,
\nwill be 55 percent owned by Cable & Wireless and 45 percent by PT
\nTrikora.<\/p>\n
The joint venture firm is initially capitalized at US$1
\nmillion, he said.<\/p>\n
\"PT MaCaSer Indonesia is the first company here to specialize
\nin telecommunication cable installation and maintenance. Until
\nnow the business has been dominated by foreign companies,\" said
\nBoedihardjo.<\/p>\n
He added that the most important thing expected from the joint
\nventure is the transfer of technology to Indonesia.<\/p>\n
MaCaSer's president, Reginald W. Ross, said that Cable &
\nWireless Marine has much experience in the Asian market,
\nincluding Indonesia. \"It has just completed the installation of
\ntwo international fiber optic cables, called Jasuraus link --
\nwhich links Port Hedland in Northwest, Australia, to Jakarta and
\nSurabaya in Indonesia,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that in March the British company joined the Daya
\nMitra Malindo consortium, which was awarded by the state-owned
\ntelecommunication company PT Telkom a 15-year license to operate
\nand develop fixed telephone networks in Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
Ross said that Cable & Wireless holds a 25 percent interest in
\nDaya Mitra Malindo.<\/p>\n
The consortium, he said, has awarded a $250 million contract
\nto Tomen Co. of Japan to install 237,000 telephone lines in
\nKalimantan. \"The construction will start this month,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to Ross, Indonesia is rapidly increasing its
\ninvestment in telecommunications and the domestic
\ntelecommunication operators. PT Telkom and PT Indosat are
\nplanning to install up to 10,000 kilometers of domestic cable
\nsystems in the next five years.<\/p>\n
Asked to estimate the total investment needed for the 10,000
\nkm cable installation, he said: \"It depends on the condition of
\nthe areas where the cables will be installed.\"<\/p>\n
But he said that the cost of installing submarine cable
\nnetwork ranges from $16,000 to $20,000 per kilometer. (13)<\/p>",
