Cable damage only trivial: Indosat<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State-owned telecommunication company PT Indosat
\nstated that the damage to the world's longest undersea cable
\nnetwork had only slightly affected the telecommunication service
\nin the country.<\/p>\n
Company spokesman Radjamin Nasution said on Wednesday that the
\ntelecommunication service had been disrupted for about an hour
\nafter the 39,000 kilometer cable network, called SEA-ME-WE 3
\n(South East Asia, Middle East to Western Europe), broke at 10:24
\na.m. on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He said Indosat quickly switched its service to another cable
\nnetwork called SEA-ME-WE 2 which also links the three regions, as
\nwell the APCN (Asia Pacific Cable Network).<\/p>\n
\"In one hour, all services were switched to the other cables
\nwhich still work properly,\" Nasution was quoted by Detikcom as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
He added the company had also used satellite transmission to
\ncontinue its service.<\/p>\n
He denied the foreign press reports that the incident had
\ncaused a significant impact on Indosat's service, saying the
\nimpact was \"less than 20 percent.\"<\/p>\n
It was not clear what caused Monday's break in a part of the
\ncable lying 60 km off the coast of Singapore in Indonesian
\nwaters.<\/p>\n
In Singapore, Deutsche Presse Agentur said local telecom
\noperators Singapore Telecom, StarHub and M1, and Internet service
\nprovider Pacific Internet said the damaged cable had not
\ndisrupted any of their services.<\/p>\n
\"Our customers are not affected because SingTel uses a
\ndiversity of cables,\" said Ivan Tan, director of corporate
\ncommunications.<\/p>\n
He said phone and Internet traffic had been diverted to
\nanother cable, the APCN, which links Singapore to Australia.<\/p>\n
It was \"still too early to say\" how long it will take to
\nrepair the damage, Tan said, adding that approval was needed from
\nthe Indonesian authorities.<\/p>\n
The damaged cable, which only became operational late last
\nyear, severely disrupted communication in Australia. (jsk)<\/p>",
