Cabinet ministers to visit Malukus<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku (JP): A 13-strong entourage of Cabinet ministers
\nled by Coordinating Minister for Social, Political and Security
\nAffairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will visit the Malukus on
\nTuesday, Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Latuconsina said the visit was aimed at speeding up the
\nprocess of rehabilitating and restoring law and order in the
\nviolence-racked provinces of Maluku and North Maluku.<\/p>\n
The minister will then fly to the neighboring province of
\nIrian Jaya, which is experiencing mounting demands for
\nindependence.<\/p>\n
During their trip to Maluku's capital Ambon, the ministers
\nwill take a close look at the latest on situation on the ground,
\naccording to Latuconsina.<\/p>\n
Also to come are Indonesian Military chief Adm. Widodo A.S.,
\nNational Police chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro and Attorney General
\nMarzuki Darusman.<\/p>\n
\"The visit is expected to result in ways to restore law and
\norder as well as to tackle the problems of refugees and riot
\nvictims,\" the governor said.<\/p>\n
Thousands have been killed and many more forced to flee since
\nthe violence erupted in January 1999.<\/p>\n
Among the ministers joining the entourage are Minister of
\nJustice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Minister of
\nDefense Mahfud M.D., Minister of Education Yahya Muhaimin,
\nMinister of Home Affairs and Regional Autonomy Surjadi Soedirdja,
\nand Minister of Foreign Affairs Alwi Shihab.<\/p>\n
\"We will discuss plans for \"floating trials\" in which speedy
\ncourt sessions will be held on board of a navy ship or civilian
\nboat guarded by the security forces,\" Latuconsina said.<\/p>\n
Separately, Pattimura Military Commander Brig. Gen. I Made
\nYasa revealed on Saturday that some 1,300 detonators concealed in
\na heap of watermelons were seized at Yos Sudarso port when they
\nwere about to be unloaded from the KM Lambelu recently.<\/p>\n
Also speaking on Saturday, Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen.
\nFirman Gani said 12 rioters linked to Laskar Jihad (Jihad Force)
\nAhlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah will face formal questioning in 12-days
\ntime on charges of possessing lethal weapons and ammunition.
