Sulawesi animals under protection<\/p>\n<p>PALU, Central Sulawesi: Central Sulawesi&apos;s Natural Resources<br>\nConservation Center (BKSDA) intends to intensify efforts in<br>\ntrying to protect 19 animal species in the area from becoming<br>\nendangered.<\/p>\n<p>The numbers of many of the 19 species have been dwindling,<br>\nlike the dwarf buffalo, the center&apos;s chief, Edy Purwanto, said<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He attributed the decreasing population of the dwarf buffalo<br>\nto the fact that more people had been poaching the animal near<br>\nthe Lore Lindu National Park for its meat.<\/p>\n<p>According to Antara, the 19 animal species include the<br>\nSulawesi crested black macaque (macaca nigra), phalanger<br>\n(phalanger ursinus), digo macaque (macaca tonkeana), tarsius<br>\n(tarsius spectrum), Sulawesi phalanger (phalanger celebensis),<br>\nSulawesi civet (macrogalidia musschenbrocki), and dare macaque<br>\n(macaca maura).<\/p>\n<p>They are protected under Law No 5\/1990.<\/p>\n<p>Among the efforts that will be employed is better monitoring<br>\nand information dissemination on the importance of protecting<br>\nthese animals.
