C. Java Panwaslu members sworn in<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java: One hundred and seventy-five members
\nof the Central Java Election Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu)
\nwere officially installed in the provincial capital of Semarang
\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n
They represent 35 regencies and cities in the province, with
\neach appointed five members.<\/p>\n
The sworn-in Panwaslu members include scholars and lecturers,
\njournalists, prosecutors, police officers and community leaders.<\/p>\n
Provincial Panwaslu chairman Hidayat Nur Sardini said in a
\nspeech at a ceremony to inaugurate the committee members that
\ntheir job of supervising the 2004 elections would be tough.<\/p>\n
\"In 1999, Central Java recorded at least 195 electoral
\nviolations, of which less than 20 percent were settled,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Most of the cases remained unresolved by police and
\nprosecutors, Hidayat said.<\/p>\n
He said he hoped that with the involvement of media and
\nuniversity representatives and community figures, the committee
\nwould perform better than during the 1999 elections.--JP<\/p>",
