C. Java gears up to boost tourism<\/p>\n
SURAKARTA, C. Java (JP): Minister of Tourism, Post and
\nTelecommunications Joop Ave has called upon local businessmen to
\nmake the most of the business opportunities which will be
\ngenerated by the opening of Surakarta as a new international
\ngateway to Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The local government and businessmen should work together to
\nimprove the area's tourist attractions and create new ones, as
\nwell as developing the supporting facilities needed to woo
\nvisitors, Joop said at the opening of Hotel Sahid Raya Solo here
\non Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"Developing good-quality hotels is one of the efforts to
\npromote tourism. But tourists do not come for the hotels but to
\nenjoy an area's specific attractions,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The local administration and businessmen should therefore pool
\ntheir resources in improving local cultural attractions, such as
\nthe Kasunanan and Mangkunegaran palaces, and in developing a wide
\nvariety of other cultural events to attract tourists.<\/p>\n
He said Surakarta would soon be open for international flights
\nfrom Singapore and its airport would be upgraded to be able to
\nhandle wide-bodied jets within two years.<\/p>\n
Joop warmly welcomed the opening of Hotel Sahid Raya Solo, a
\nfour-star, 12-story hotel with 160 rooms, saying it would greatly
\nsupport tourism promotion in the city and surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
He also commended Sukamdani Sahid Gitosardjono for his success
\nin developing what he called the largest private national hotel
\nchain in the country.<\/p>\n
\"I think the Sahid Hotel group also deserves high appreciation
\nfor its contribution to the development of human resources for
\nthe tourist industry,\" Joop added.<\/p>\n
The Sahid group also owns and manages one of the country's
\nbest tourism schools, a tour company and a hotel management and
\nconsultancy corporation.<\/p>\n
Sukamdani said the Sahid Hotel chain now had 14 hotels with a
\ntotal of 3,020 rooms, including one in Ujungpandang (S.Sulawesi)
\nand another in Lombok, east of Bali, which are due to open later
\nthis year and early next year respectively.<\/p>\n
He said the newly-inaugurated hotel was the refurbished
\nversion of the three-story Hotel Sahid Sala with which he began
\nhis hotel business 30 years ago. (vin)<\/p>",
