Java factories polluting rivers<\/p>\n<p>DEMAK, Central Java: Two rivers in Demak regency are heavily<br>\npolluted by industrial waste dumped by factories in nearby Kudus<br>\nregency and the city of Semarang.<\/p>\n<p>PT Pusaka Raya Kudus, a big paper factory in Kudus, has dumped<br>\nwaste into Wulan River, while Babon River is being polluted by<br>\nthe waste from another factory in the Genuk Industrial Estate.<\/p>\n<p>The local people can no longer use the water, which has turned<br>\nreddish, to wash and cook.<\/p>\n<p>Demak's city spokesman, Harini Trisnadi, said the authorities<br>\ndid not oblige all factories to install waste treatment units<br>\nbecause they would not be able to afford it.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the municipal administration is considering<br>\ninstalling a centralized waste treatment unit funded collectively<br>\nby companies in the Genuk Industrial Estate.
