C. Java factories pollute Semarang<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: The Central Java provincial environmental impact
\nmanagement agency (Bapedalda) estimates that around 800 companies
\nare contributing to the high level of pollution in Semarang.<\/p>\n
\"The pollution from these companies is both solid and liquid
\nwaste as well as air pollution,\" head of Semarang's Bapedalda
\nWidi Widodo said on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Widi however, declined to name the companies.<\/p>\n
He said the pollution resulted from a lack of adequate waste
\ntreatment facilities at these factories, causing poor quality of
\nsoil, water and a putrid odor surrounding the factories.<\/p>\n
\"We monitor the rivers and also water from the wells in the
\nresidential areas located in the vicinity of the factories,\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Separately Semarang Mayor Sukawi Sutarif also aired his
\nconcern over environmental pollution in his mayoralty.<\/p>\n
\"The mayoralty is now working on a bylaw to control
\nenvironmental pollution, although it will also take some time to
\nmake the business community here aware of it,\" Sukawi said. (har)<\/p>",
