Java districts could merge<\/p>\n<p>SEMARANG, Central Java: As many as 10 districts in Central<br>\nJava could be merged under a new law on regional autonomy.<\/p>\n<p>The districts of Pekalongan, Semarang, Cilacap, Rembang,<br>\nGrobogan, Karanganyar, Magelang, Salatiga, Wonosobo and Purworejo<br>\ncould be merged with other districts under Law No 22\/1999,<br>\nTurtiantoro, head of the Center for the Assessment of Regional<br>\nAutonomy and Public Policy of the social and political sciences<br>\ndepartment of Diponegoro University, said here on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The districts were recently assessed for such a merger based<br>\non their financial capabilities and organization, administration<br>\nand demographic criteria, he said, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>Central Java currently has 35 districts.
