Bylaw on municipal council passed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The City Council approved on Thursday a bylaw on the
\nestablishment of municipal councils amid concerns that the
\ncouncils' seats would be filled by members of political parties.<\/p>\n
The bylaw requires that candidates for the municipal councils
\nshould not be employed as civil servants, military and police
\nofficers or be members of the subdistrict councils.<\/p>\n
Candidates for the municipal councils must be approved by the
\nCity Council.<\/p>\n
Only the Golkar Party faction rejected the bylaw, saying that
\nit would reduce democratic values at the grass roots level.<\/p>\n
\"We also fear that the seats would be allocated for political
\nparty members. Cadres who have no permanent job, would be given
\nthe seats\" the faction chairman Ade Supriatna told reporters.<\/p>\n
There would be 44 municipal councillors based on the number of
\ndistricts in the city. Central Jakarta municipal council, for
\nexample, would have eight council members.<\/p>\n
Each member will receive a monthly salary of about Rp 1
