Buyat residents withdraw lawsuit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Three Buyat Bay residents have withdrawn a US$543
\nmillion civil lawsuit filed against PT Newmont Minahasa Raya for
\nallegedly causing heavy metal poisoning.<\/p>\n
"The residents -- Rasit Rahman, Masna Stirman and Juhira
\nRatubane -- have officially acknowledged and affirmed that there
\nis no evidence that mine tailings from PT Newmont Minahasa Raya's
\nmining activities were the cause of any diseases that they may be
\nsuffering from," said Mochamad Kasali, Newmont legal advisor.<\/p>\n
At the plaintiffs' request, Newmont also agreed to withdraw a
\nseparate defamation suit that it had filed against Iskandar
\nSitorus, the head of Legal Aid Foundation for Health, said
\nKasali.<\/p>\n
On Sept. 30, Newmont filed a $2 million suit against Sitorus
\ncharging him with falsely accusing Newmont's mine operation of
\ncausing Minamata disease at Buyat Bay. -- JP<\/p>",
