Buy Indonesian<\/p>\n
President Soeharto has once again appealed to Indonesians to
\nshow their appreciation of home-made products. Mothers, he said,
\nshould encourage their children to use products made by
\nIndonesians.<\/p>\n
It is indeed a cause for concern that due to the endless
\nstream of advertisements, young Indonesians in the middle and
\nupper classes have become virtually addicted to imported
\nproducts. There seems to be a certain prestige in using or
\nwearing foreign brand products.<\/p>\n
This has created a trend so that young people in the lower-
\nmiddle and lower classes have developed a liking for fake foreign
\nproducts. Unfortunately, our own producers -- especially those in
\nthe small business category -- are quite willing to satisfy this
\ndemand.<\/p>\n
The offense of manufacturing fake products aside, the appeal
\nto buy domestic products deserves our support, given the dire
\nconsequences that a loss of the domestic market share might have
\non our economy. At the same time, however, our preference for
\nhome-made products should not be devoid of sound consideration.
\nRather, it should imply a demand that our producers improve the
\nquality of their products and make them competitive and at least
\ncome close to their imported equivalents in terms of quality.
\nThus, the appeal to our people to cherish our own domestic
\nproducts cannot be separated from an appeal to our manufacturers
\nto improve the quality of their products.<\/p>\n
