Butet in 'Jangan Menangis Indonesia'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Yogyakarta-born artist Butet Kertaredjasa, who soared
\nto fame imitating former president Soeharto's voice in his staged
\nmonologs, will play a role in an upcoming show by Teater Mandiri.<\/p>\n
\"Butet is an artist whom I admire, and I have long desired to
\nshare a stage with him,\" playwright Putu Wijaya said as quoted by
\nAntara news agency.<\/p>\n
\"I also admire mas (brother) Putu since our first meeting in
\n1984,\" Butet swiftly responded.<\/p>\n
The two were speaking to journalists during a press conference
\nin Jakarta. Putu's Teater Mandiri will stage a two-hour
\nperformance of Jangan Menangis Indonesia (Don't Cry Indonesia)
\nfor two consecutive days on July 15 and July 16 at Graha Bhakti
\nBudaya in Taman Ismail Marzuki compound in Cikini, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Jangan Menangis portrays how the majority of Indonesians now
\nlive in fear and terror and grapple with an uncertain livelihood
\nwith shaky law enforcement, thriving corruption and vulnerable
\nsocial support structures.<\/p>\n
Butet revealed that Putu gave him freedom to explore his role
\nin the play. \"I am glad to have been given this kind of freedom
\nto express myself.\" he said.<\/p>\n
Butet, besides being well-known for his mastery of the
\nmonolog, has long been part of Yogyakarta-based, semi-traditional
\ntheater company, Gandrik.<\/p>\n
But above all, he said that he owed a lot to his late father,
\ndance maestro Bagong Kussudiardjo, who exposed him to arts and
\ncultural activities from a tender age.<\/p>\n
Besides Butet, Rieke Dyah Pitaloka, Yantho Kribo, Ucok
\nHutagaol, Wendy Nasution, Flen Herman and Umbu Tangela will also
