Busway not to relieve congestion?<\/p>\n

Officials from the Jakarta provincial administration,
\nincluding Governor Sutiyoso, have reiterated that in the first
\nplace, the busway project is not aimed at relieving traffic
\ncongestion. As a citizen frequently trapped in traffic jams, I
\nwonder what the project is actually intended to do.<\/p>\n
Is it only for the purpose of making Jakarta look stylish, so
\nthat its leader will in the future be remembered as the initiator
\nof this facility? This question is relevant because the
\ncongestion of Jakarta's roads has remained unsolved for years.<\/p>\n
The 3-in-1 (three passengers in a car) requirement for certain
\nroads, the building of flyovers and underpasses have entailed new
\nproblems instead of reducing the traffic jams. Meanwhile, the
\nbusway system will continue despite warnings of its consequences.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta provincial leadership is today characterized by
\nits top-down policy making without heeding public opinion and
\ncriticism. To the people of Jakarta in general, the busway
\nproject should serve as one way of penetrating the city's road
\nbottlenecks, otherwise it would be a strange undertaking.<\/p>\n
