Business tycoon Bob Hasan to face trial<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Timber tycoon Mohamad \"Bob\" Hasan will face
\ntrial for corruption this month as the case dossiers will be
\nsubmitted to Central Jakarta District Court next week, a
\nprosecutor said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Andi Syarifuddin, assistant of special crimes investigations
\nat the Jakarta Prosecutor's Office, said general prosecutors led
\nby Arnold Angkouw would first study the 8,000-page dossier.<\/p>\n
\"The prosecutors will probably file the case next week,\" he
\ntold journalists at his office.<\/p>\n
To ensure his presence at the trial, Hasan, a former golfing
\nbuddy of former president Soeharto, was put under 20-day state
\narrest on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He is currently being detained at the Attorney General's
\nOffice compound.<\/p>\n
\"The public will blame prosecutors if we fail to present Bob
\nto the court,\" Andi said.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors on Thursday also handed the dossiers of the
\ncorruption case involving Hasan's company PT Mapindo Parama to
\nthe Jakarta Prosecutor's Office. It is alleged the company caused
\nsome US$75.62 million in losses to the state.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by his lawyer Augustinus Hutajulu and long-time
\nfriend Andi Darussalam Tabusala, Hasan, who is currently under
\nhouse arrest as a suspect in another corruption case, refused to
\ncomment on his new arrest status.<\/p>\n
\"I will yield to the instruction,\" he briefly said.<\/p>\n
Augustinus, however, blasted the detention, saying that his
\nclient had been cooperative throughout the investigation.<\/p>\n
The case centers around a $87-million government project to
\nperform aerial mapping and airborne radar imaging of forestry
\nresources in the country. Hasan, who was chair of the Indonesian
\nForest Concessionaires Association (APHI), awarded the project to
\nPT Mapindo.<\/p>\n
The prosecutors found that Hasan, who briefly served as
\nminister of trade and industry, violated the contract, and that
\nthe procedures and the results of the mapping were not in
\naccordance with the requirements of the contract.<\/p>\n
The corruption, which is believed to have taken place between
\n1989 and 1999, caused an estimated $168 million in losses to
\nAPHI, prosecutors allege. (bby)<\/p>",
