Business as usual at Tanamur, Cafe Batavia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Well known night spots Tanamur and Cafe Batavia
\nhave resumed normal operations.<\/p>\n
A.F. Lapian, head of the City Law and Order Office announced
\non Monday that the city administration had temporarily closed
\ndown Tanamur, a discotheque in the Gambir district of Central
\nJakarta, because the establishment was believed to have been used
\nas a venue for transactions involving prohibited drugs.<\/p>\n
Cafe Batavia restaurant, on Jl. Pintu Besar Utara, West
\nJakarta, which was mistakenly identified by city administration
\nofficials as a discotheque, was also closed for remaining open
\nafter 2 a.m. on Monday.<\/p>\n
However, an executive of Tanamur, who requested anonymity,
\ntold The Jakarta Post yesterday that the closure order had been
\nrevoked soon after being imposed on Monday, after Tanamur's
\nmanagement cleared up a misunderstanding about an alleged drug
\ntransaction.<\/p>\n
\"We explained that the problem began when Tanamur security
\nguards caught a drunken visitor holding drugs. The drunken person
\nwas handed over to the police,\" the executive said.<\/p>\n
But instead of receiving praise for its actions, the
\ndiscotheque was accused by a special city administration team,
\nwhich had launched an operation that morning, of being an arena
\nfor drug transactions, he said.<\/p>\n
The team is made up of representatives from a number of
\ninstitutions, including the City Tourism Office, the City Law and
\nOrder Office and the City Police.<\/p>\n
Graham James of Cafe Batavia said that his restaurant was
\nnever closed down because the closure order went to the wrong
\naddress.<\/p>\n
\"Cafe Batavia is a restaurant, not a discotheque,\" he said. As
\na restaurant, it is allowed to operate 24 hours a day, he added.<\/p>\n
Members of the special team did disable the restaurant's sound
\nequipment on Monday morning, but they allowed it to recommence
\nnormal operations yesterday.<\/p>\n
The city administration is currently intensifying its
\nsupervision of discotheques throughout the city after receiving
\nreports that some of the establishments were used by drug
