Bush to attend APEC summit<\/p>\n
BEIJING (Reuters): U.S. President George W. Bush will attend
\nan October summit of Asia-Pacific leaders in Shanghai despite the
\ncatastrophic terror attacks on the United States, a top Chinese
\nofficial said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Bush told Chinese President Jiang Zemin in a telephone
\nconversation on Wednesday night he would attend the meeting, Vice
\nForeign Minister Wang Guangya told a news conference.<\/p>\n
\"After the conversation between the Chinese and U.S.
\npresidents after the attack, President George W. Bush has
\nconfirmed that he will attend as planned the October event, the
\nAPEC informal meeting in Shanghai,\" said Wang.<\/p>\n
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit is scheduled to
\nfeature the first meeting between Jiang and Bush. Nineteen other
\nleaders from around the region are due to attend.<\/p>\n
Wang gave assurances of tight security at the event.<\/p>\n
\"The relevant organizing committees for the APEC informal
\nleaders' meeting to be held in Shanghai have always paid the
\nhighest attention to the issue of security,\" he said. \"We will
\ntry our best to provide security guarantees.\"<\/p>",
