Bus stations to take action against unsafe buses<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): All city bus terminals have been authorized to
\nfine unsafe buses and unlicensed bus drivers.<\/p>\n
\"I have asked the heads of all Jakarta terminals to
\nimmediately ticket every bus they find guilty of not fulfilling
\nthe prescribed regulations,\" said J.P. Sepang, the head of the
\nCity Land Transportation and Traffic Control Office, at the City
\nCouncil yesterday.<\/p>\n
Sepang added that 194 Metromini buses have been impounded by
\nhis office for a number of violations by their drivers.<\/p>\n
The most common violations are driving without a uniform,
\ndriving without a license and not having their route
\nidentification card (kartu trayek), Sepang said.<\/p>\n
\"Yesterday I caught red-handed a Metromini driver without
\ndriving documents who had driven the bus for three days,\" Sepang
\npointed out, \"which makes it clear that he is an illegal part-
\ntime driver\".<\/p>\n
Sepang, when asked by The Post to respond to the Metromini
\nowners' complaints of overly harsh public scrutiny of the
\ncompany, said it was their own fault.<\/p>\n
The public are tired of the firm because they too often
\nneglect the driving regulations and endanger public safety,
\nSepang said.<\/p>\n
Eleven owners of Metromini minibuses blasted the continual
\npublic scrutiny of their company on Wednesday as \"cruel\".<\/p>\n
In a meeting with city councilors the minibus owners said it
\nwas detrimental to the survival of their company.<\/p>\n
Attacked<\/p>\n
Six Metromini minibuses were burned and damaged in Jagakarsa,
\nSouth Jakarta, on March 18. The incident took place when an angry
\nmob, misled by reports that an area resident found dead at the
\nminibus pool had been struck by a Metromini, attacked the buses.<\/p>\n
The public wrath directed towards Metromini came following the
\nMetromini crash on March 6 which left 33 passengers dead and
\nseveral more injured.<\/p>\n
\"Is it fair that we should bear the burden of the deed of that
\nreckless driver, and that because of him our company, which
\ninvolves the livelihood of many people, has fallen into
\ndisrepute?\" Siantar Nainggolan, one of the owners, said in anger.<\/p>\n
Members of the public have pointed out that poor central
\nadministration and other structural factors at the firm are a big
\npart of the problem.<\/p>\n
Siantar also questioned the motives behind the plan of North
\nJakarta Mayor Suprawito to erect a monument named \"The Deadly
\nMetromini Monument\".<\/p>\n
According to Siantar, such a monument would only remind people
\nof the March 6 accident and stir up their hatred and vengeance
\nevery time they see it.<\/p>\n
Suprawito said should the monument be erected, it will serve
\nas a warning to all drivers, especially Metromini drivers, that
\nsuch an accident should never happen again.<\/p>\n
\"So, what's wrong with it?\" Suprawito said, adding that he
\ndoes not mean to discredit Metromini owners.<\/p>\n
Mulyono Hadi, another owner, was angry with the sub-divisional
\nhead of the Land Transportation and Traffic Office (DLLAJR),
\nHerman Tonglo Langi.<\/p>\n
It was he who said that it was not clear whether Metromini was
\na limited liabilities company or whether it was a cooperative.<\/p>\n
According to Mulyono, Herman's statement, which appeared in
\nKompas daily on Monday, has caused reluctance on the part of
\nbanks to provide them with new loans or prolong their loans. (06)<\/p>",
