Bus owners need safety guarantee<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Most buses in the city have remained off the
\nstreet because there is no guarantee for their safety against
\ncontinuing mob violence, an official said Saturday.<\/p>\n
The city's Land Transportation Agency chief Aip Sjaifudin said
\nhe hoped most city buses would resume operating today if their
\nsafety could be guaranteed by the authorities.<\/p>\n
\"Many roads are still barricaded by either the authorities or
\nmobs. Most bus owners have opted to wait until the streets are
\nsafe,\" he was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Besides, most gas stations have remained closed for fear of
\nrenewed violence, he said.<\/p>\n
Commuters have found buses scarce. Many have to rely on ojek
\n(taxi motorcycles), which are a lot more expensive.<\/p>\n
Ministry of Communications spokesman Bambang S. Ervans said
\nthat of the 400 buses belonging to the city-owned bus company
\nPPD, only 195 were currently in operation.<\/p>\n
Five PPD buses were vandalized and one burned out during a
\nriot last week.<\/p>\n
Damri, a government-owned bus company, will resume operating
\n20 buses to carry passengers to and from the airport. (pan)<\/p>",
