Bus drivers attack police station in Cirebon<\/p>\n

Over 100 bus drivers and crew in Cirebon, West Java, went on the
\nrampage on Sunday morning after Palimanan Police chief First
\nInsp. Bambang S. allegedly shot dead bus driver Anjani, 29, who
\nworked for Bhineka bus company.<\/p>\n
The angry mob, which arrived at Palimanan police station at
\naround 7 a.m., smashed window panes, throwing out furniture and
\nburning it on the street, causing a major traffic jam on the
\nnorth coast main road.<\/p>\n
The shooting also prompted the crews of some 300 buses plying
\nthe Cirebon to Bandung, Cirebon to Merak and Cirebon to Jakarta
\nroutes to strike from 8 a.m. through 2 p.m. on Sunday, forcing
\nthousands of bus passengers headed for the three destinations to
\nwait for hours at the town's Harjamukti intercity bus terminal.<\/p>\n
Cirebon Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Musyafak said his unit had
\ndetained two people for questioning.<\/p>\n
\"We are still investigating the two incidents,\" said Musyafak,
\nadding that Mobile Brigade personnel had been deployed to restore
\npublic order and prevent further violence.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, thousands of bus passengers were stranded at the
\ncity's bus terminal on Sunday after more than 300 bus crews went
\non strike in a demonstration of solidarity with Anjani, a
\nresident of Banjaran, Bandung regency.<\/p>\n
Drivers and crews of Bhineka and Sahabat buses sealed off the
\nHarjamukti intercity bus terminal, to prevent buses from leaving
\nthe station.<\/p>\n
Pepen Supandi, 40, a bus crewman, said they would continue the
\nstrike until the police promised to investigate the incident
\nthoroughly.<\/p>\n
\"The shooting is unacceptable; it is murder, as the police
\ntook the law into their own hands,\" said Pepen, adding that the
\nkiller should be detained on neutral ground.<\/p>\n
The strike ended at around 2 p.m., after protracted
\nnegotiations between bus drivers and police officers.<\/p>\n
Separately, Cirebon Police chief Sr. Comr. Soenaryono said
\nthat he had dismissed First Insp. Bambang S. following the fatal
\nincident.<\/p>\n
He added his office had also started an investigation into it.<\/p>\n
Soenaryono said that police could not yet announce the result
\nof the investigation, as they were awaiting results of the
\nforensic tests on Anjani's body.<\/p>\n
The body was examined by doctors at Gunung Jati hospital,
\nCirebon. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.<\/p>\n
The incident occurred at about 1.30 a.m. on Sunday. Police
\nchief First Insp. Bambang allegedly shot Anjani after chasing him
\non the road.<\/p>",
