Bus commuters say crews' attitude needs overhaul<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Commuters complained on Monday that bus terminal
\noperators in the capital should improve the attitude of errant
\nofficials instead of spending heavily on renovations of their
\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
They were asked to comment on their main hopes for changes in
\nservices at the inter-city bus terminals with the approach of
\nnext month's peak season of the fasting month of Ramadhan,
\nChristmas, New Year's Eve and the post-fasting month celebration
\nof Idul Fitri in January.<\/p>\n
They said the main problem faced by the seasonal travelers was
\nthe deceitful behavior of the terminal officials and bus crews,
\nwho always attempted to cheat passengers by hiking fares.<\/p>\n
The city's Land Transportation Agency last week announced its
\nplan to spend some Rp 2 billion (US$281,700) for the renovation
\nof six bus terminals in anticipation of the peak season.<\/p>\n
\"Instead of renovating the facilities, changing the bad
\nattitude of the terminal officials and bus crews would be more
\nworthwhile,\" said passenger Dedi Sutarjo at Pulogadung Bus
\nTerminal in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Dedi said dishonest officials have for years illegally hiked
\nticket fares for their own benefit and forced people onto buses
\nwhen the vehicles were already overloaded.<\/p>\n
Another passenger, Florentine, agreed with him, saying she had
\nyet to see a change in the behavior and attitude of officials and
\nbus crews.<\/p>\n
\"The administration should change their way of thinking, that
\nsomehow renovating the terminals would solve the problems,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Earmarked for renovation are Senen Bus Terminal in Central
\nJakarta; Rawamangun, Pulogadung and Kampung Rambutan in East
\nJakarta; Kalideres in West Jakarta; and Tanjung Priok in North
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Renovation work was already under way on Monday in the
\ncompound and ticket booths of the Senen and Pulogadung bus
\nterminals.<\/p>\n
When asked to comment on the passengers' complaints, head of
\nthe Pulogadung terminal, Bambang Permadi, said that passengers
\nwere also partly responsible for the irregularities.<\/p>\n
\"Passengers are sometimes reluctant to obey the rules on
\npublic order. For instance, they stop the buses outside the
\nterminal and refuse to follow the officials' instruction,\" he
