Bus accident kills 4 people, injures 5 others<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): At least four people were killed and five others
\ninjured when a speeding, overloaded minibus hit a shelter at a
\nbus stop in Tanjung Duren district, West Jakarta, yesterday
\nmorning.<\/p>\n
Among the injured commuters was a Navy officer, who was
\nwaiting at the bus stop on Jl. S. Parman.<\/p>\n
The Kopaja 86 minibus, plying the Lebak Bulus (South Jakarta)
\n- Kota (West Jakarta) route, overturned after colliding with the
\nshelter.<\/p>\n
The driver, who was caught by bank security guards while
\ntrying to run from the scene, later claimed that the minibus'
\nbrakes were malfunctioning.<\/p>\n
A witness, Syahbudi, said that the minibus was packed with
\npassengers and traveling at high speed when it approached the
\nslow lane alongside the bus stop.<\/p>\n
\"First, it struck a man crossing the street before it crashed
\ninto the shelter and wiped out the people standing there,\"
\nSyahbudi, who was on a public bus behind the Kopaja, said.<\/p>\n
The driver managed to flee from the angry crowd but his
\nconductor was captured.<\/p>\n
Alert security guards from nearby Dewa Ruci Bank, grabbed the
\ndriver, later identified as Endang Furqon, 36, after he managed
\nto tear off his driver's uniform and leap across a ditch in front
\nof the private bank.<\/p>\n
During preliminary questioning by local traffic police, Endang
\nblamed the vehicle's malfunctioning brakes and said that he was
\nonly driving about 40 kilometers per hour.<\/p>\n
\"I didn't know that the brakes didn't work properly.<\/p>\n
\"I panicked after I hit the first victim. But I became more
\nafraid when I realized that I had hit some other people.<\/p>\n
\"That's why I decided to escape instead of being beaten by the
\nangry mob.\"<\/p>\n
But Endang, who became a driver two weeks ago after working
\nfor years as a conductor, promised to take responsibility for the
\naccident.<\/p>\n
The four casualties were sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital in Central Jakarta for a postmortem examination, while
\nthe five injured victims were admitted to nearby Sumber Waras
\nGeneral Hospital.<\/p>\n
Three of the four casualties died on the spot while the
\nfourth, identified as Bambang Edi, an employee of Mal Taman
\nAnggrek shopping center, died a few hours later.<\/p>\n
The first three victims were identified as Sudarji, 37, of
\nKemandoran, Kebayoran Lama, in South Jakarta; Zaenudin, 29, of
\nGg. Gebang, Tanjung Duren in Grogol; and Almer, 42, of Jl. Kramat
\nBatu, Gandaria in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
A source at Sumber Waras General Hospital said the injured
\nvictims were identified as Navy First Lt. Sunarto, Ismiyanto,
\nRinaldo Asri, Djaya and Iin Marlina.<\/p>\n
\"Most of them suffered severe chest, head and abdominal
