The Bhaga Utsaha Padruwen Desa Adat (BUPDA) Intaran is committed to safeguarding 80 hectares of productive subak farmland in Prapat Beris, Sanur Kauh, Denpasar, to bolster food security amid rapid development pressures in Bali. Chairman Anak Agung Ketut Gede Aryateja emphasised that this land, managed under traditional subak systems distinct from tourism-oriented ones, follows ancestral irrigation and planting practices. The group plans to explore models from other regions, starting with absorbing crop harvests to encourage landowners against converting the agricultural land.",

This land, owned by Desa Adat Intaran, is still used for
agricultural activities.

“Subak Intaran Barat and Subak Intaran Timur, which are productive,
cover about 80 hectares. We want to revive agriculture as a means of
food security,” said BUPDA Intaran Chairman Anak Agung Ketut Gede
Aryateja to detikBali on Friday (8/5/2026).

Aryateja stressed that the subak land is purely for food defence,
differing from tourism subak. According to him, the types of crops,
irrigation systems, and planting patterns on that agricultural land
follow the subak tradition.

“For example, if we get an even year, the subak in Desa Adat Intaran
gets five days of water in one week. The remaining two days are for
irrigating the neighbouring village. In the following year, our village
gets only two days, and they get five,” explained Aryateja.

Aryateja acknowledged that the massive development poses a
significant challenge to the agricultural sector in Bali at present. He
wants to convince landowners not to convert the land’s function.

“We are just starting this. Because we are looking for models in
other areas to preserve those 80 hectares of rice fields. The first step
might be to absorb the harvest yields,” added Aryateja.
",
