Bulog scam suspect's arrest extended<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The prime suspect of the multi-billion rupiah
\nState Logistics Agency (Bulog) scandal, Alip Agung Suwondo, will
\nremain at the Cipinang penitentiary after prosecutors extended
\nhis arrest for another 30 days from Jan. 1, 2001.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the Attorney General's Office, Chuck
\nSuryosumpeno, said the extension is necessary because the general
\nprosecutors require more time to study the dossiers before filing
\nthe case with the South Jakarta District Court.<\/p>\n
\"The trial is likely to be held before the extension of the
\narrest due on Jan. 31,\" he told journalists.<\/p>\n
Initially, Suwondo, alias An Peng Sui, was detained at the
\ncity police detention house but was later moved to the jail in
\norder to allay fears that the suspect would attempt to intimidate
\nother witnesses in the case or tamper with evidence.<\/p>\n
The police investigation found Suwondo violated Article 378 of
\nthe Criminal Code on fraud, Article 372 on embezzlement and
\nArticle 480 on storing stolen goods.<\/p>\n
Suwondo allegedly defrauded the Bulog employee foundation,
\nYanatera, of Rp 35 billion at the behest of President Abdurrahman
\nWahid. The money was used for personal interests of the suspect,
\nalso known as Abdurrahman's masseur, causing losses to Yanatera.<\/p>\n
The scandal has added fuel to the uneasy relations between the
\nPresident and the House of Representatives. Former National
\nPolice chief Gen. Rusdihardjo reportedly testified before the
\nHouse special committee investigating the case that Abdurrahman
\nwas involved in the scandal.<\/p>\n
The committee is expected to complete its investigation this
