Buildings must apply standard security<\/p>\n

The city administration has given building managements a Sept. 7
\ndeadline to improve security in an effort to prevent further
\nterrorist attacks.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso said on Friday if the building managements
\nfailed to meet security standards set by the administration by
\nthe deadline, the city would publicly announce that the buildings
\nwere \"not safe\".<\/p>\n
\"I think one month is long enough for them to buy metal
\ndetectors and other security equipment,\" the governor said after
\nofficially closing the media center at the Sari Pan Pacific Hotel
\nin Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The media center was opened on Aug. 10, following the bombing
\nat the JW Marriott Hotel in South Jakarta which killed 12 people
\nand wounded 150 others. The center was used by police and
\nofficials to brief journalists about the investigation into the
\nbombing.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso warned building managements that if the
\nadministration pronounced their buildings to be unsafe, it would
\nharm their credibility.<\/p>\n
The governor ordered buildings to improve their security
\nstandards several days after the Aug. 5 Marriott bombing, when he
\nand top security officials met with the managements of hotels,
\nrestaurants, office buildings, shopping malls and other
\ncommercial buildings.<\/p>\n
Explaining the security standards being sought by the
\nadministration, Sutiyoso said buildings should have adequate
\nsecurity equipment, particularly metal detectors, as well as
\ntrained personnel.<\/p>\n
Adequate numbers of security officers are important because
\nvehicles approaching buildings should be physically observed, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He stressed the need for building managements to meet security
\nstandards to provide a sense of secure to visitors.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso, a former Jakarta Military commander, also said he
\nwould go forward with plans to deploy military personnel to
\nassist the police in providing security in the city.<\/p>\n
He said the soldiers would be deployed at strategic spots like
\ngovernment offices, shopping malls, private buildings and
\ncommercial centers.<\/p>\n
He said he had officially discussed the matter with both
\npolice and military officers.<\/p>\n
Asked about the number of soldiers to be deployed, he said
\nthat would be discussed by the military and police.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso corrected a previous statement that soldiers would
\nonly be attached to police units. \"Apart from being attached to
\npolice units, the soldiers might also establish security units to
\nguard certain areas.\"<\/p>\n
He stressed the need for the military involvement in providing
\nsecurity in Jakarta due to the limited number of police officers.<\/p>\n
He did not say for how long the military personnel would be
\ndeployed, indicating it depended on the security situation.<\/p>\n
Critics have said deploying soldiers in the city would
\nfrighten visitors away from public places.<\/p>",
