Buildings around Monas must be painted white<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): All buildings facing the National Monument
\n(Monas) park in Central Jakarta will have to be painted white.<\/p>\n
The head of the Medan Merdeka park project advisory team,
\nMuhammad Danisworo, said yesterday that this is part of the plan
\nto engineer Medan Merdeka area to aesthetically support the park.<\/p>\n
Danisworo said white buildings will help beautify the park
\nbecause they will blend in with their surroundings.<\/p>\n
\"The area around Monas park is not integrated with the park,
\nit doesn't support the park. It is important to create a certain
\nlandscape that suits the park,\" Danisworo said.<\/p>\n
The Medan Merdeka areas consist of Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan,
\nUtara, Barat and Timur. There are many office buildings, both
\nprivate and government owned, in the areas.<\/p>\n
The government is handling the project to renovate and
\nbeautify Monas park, to be renamed Medan Merdeka park, and change
\nit into a city \"forest\" in which various kinds of trees will be
\nplanted on 60 hectares of the 80 hectares available.<\/p>\n
Lungs of capital<\/p>\n
Various tree species have so far been planted in the park to
\nmake the area the lungs of the sprawling capital.<\/p>\n
Various facilities, such as parking lots and a commercial
\ncenter will be built under the park.<\/p>\n
The underground parking lots and an open air theater will be
\nbuilt in the south and west parts of the monument.<\/p>\n
Another objective of the project is to control the
\ndevelopment in the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
Danisworo said that the project, which began in 1994, is
\nexpected to be completed in 2005. It is being financed by the
\ncity and state budget and donations from the public.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi urged the advisory team to integrate the
\nproject with the city's future subway system, seeing as the
\nsubway system will pass through the area.<\/p>\n
He foresees a possibility that the project will need a special
\nunderground channel from the subway station to Gambir station. (yns)<\/p>",
