        "content": "<p>Tanjung Enim, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo Subianto has just\ninaugurated the start of construction, or groundbreaking, for 13\nsecond-phase downstreaming projects with a total estimated investment\nvalue of Rp116 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>One of the projects inaugurated is the coal downstreaming project\ninto Dimethyl Ether (DME) in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>This DME project was initiated by Danantara and executed jointly by\nthree State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), namely the Mining SOE Holding MIND\nID, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), and PT Pertamina (Persero).<\/p>\n<p>Director of Downstreaming and Product Diversification at PT Bukit\nAsam Tbk (PTBA), Turino Yulianto, emphasised that this coal-to-DME\ndownstreaming project is part of the National Strategic Project (PSN)\nthat plays an important role, particularly in strengthening national\nenergy resilience.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the project uses clean coal technology capable of\nreducing emissions by 30-40% compared to direct coal combustion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project uses what is termed clean coal technology, where\nemissions can drop by 30-40% compared to just burning coal directly,\u201d he\nexplained during the groundbreaking event for the Second-Phase Coal\nDownstreaming Project to develop coal into Dimethyl Ether (DME) in\nTanjung Enim, South Sumatra, on Wednesday (29\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>Turino explained that the DME plant will process 7 million tonnes of\ncoal into 1.4 million tonnes of DME or equivalent to 1 million tonnes of\nLPG per year.<\/p>\n<p>This means that the coal-to-DME downstreaming project will contribute\nto reducing LPG imports by around 1 million tonnes per year. As is\nknown, Indonesia still imports about 7 million tonnes of LPG\nannually.<\/p>\n<p>The DME product will later be absorbed by PT Pertamina (Persero)\nthrough PT Pertamina Patra Niaga.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, he added that the coal to be processed is low-rank coal\nor low-calorie coal that has not been optimally utilised so far, while\nits availability in Indonesia is abundant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, it\u2019s coal that hasn\u2019t been utilised so far and there\u2019s a lot of\nit in Indonesia. So once this project runs, God willing, if it continues\nto develop, we can utilise low-rank coal in Indonesia. For 1.4 million\ntonnes of DME, we use 7 million tonnes of coal per year,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
