Buffaloes, ducks terrible racers<\/p>\n
SEMARANG, Central Java (JP): Twenty-four pairs of buffaloes and
\n280 ducks taking part in the first-ever contest yesterday turned
\nout to be poor racers.<\/p>\n
In addition to speed, the contestants were also judged for
\ntheir \"style\". Buffaloes were to sprint their 75-meter lap while
\nthe ducks had to waddle their way to the finish line, 50 meters
\naway.<\/p>\n
The buffalo races, or karapan, and duck herding competition
\nwere organized to enliven Semarang's 448th anniversary.<\/p>\n
Judges had a hard time determining the winners because the
\nbuffaloes and ducks kept breaking the rules by running outside of
\nthe lines.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Purwosari village Bambang Gunadi said that
\ncontesting buffaloes should be provided with reigns in the future
\nso that they will be more easily harnessed.<\/p>\n
Semarang mayor Soetrisno Suharto acknowledged that the event
\nsponsored by the provincial tourism office was \"exciting\" but the
\nresults were somewhat \"disappointing,\" Antara reported.<\/p>\n
When presenting cups and cash for the owners of the animals,
\nhe said the event would be held annually but asked that the rules
