Buffalo thieves resort to high-tech<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR: High-tech buffalo thieves in Malaysia's eastern
\nstate of Sabah on Borneo island using cellphone massaging to
\nspread rumors that headhunters are on the prowl, a report said
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
The thieves hope the SMS (short message service) messages will
\nrevive fears of an ancient and gruesome Borneo tradition of
\ncollecting the heads of dead enemies as trophies, thus keeping
\nvillagers from venturing out of their houses at night, a police
\nspokesman told The Star.<\/p>\n
The rustlers would then be able to steal herds of water-
\nbuffalo at their leisure.<\/p>\n
The headhunter rumors were \"nonsense and baseless\", said
\nDeputy Superintendent Edward Koromol, adding that the district
\nCriminal Investigation Department had been tasked with catching
