Budiman on trial next week<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Budiman Sudjatmiko, the leader of the Democratic
\nPeople's Party (PRD) accused of masterminding the July 27 riots,
\nwill go on trial next Thursday.<\/p>\n
Budiman, who helped found the previously obscure youth
\norganization, will be tried at Central Jakarta District Court
\nalong with four of his activist friends on charges of subversion,
\nwhich carries a maximum penalty of death.<\/p>\n

\nSukarata said Tuesday he has appointed the judges for the trials.<\/p>\n
\"We've studied the three dossiers presented to us Monday and
\nset up three panels of judges,\" he said.<\/p>\n
At least five people died in the riots that shook the capital
\non July 27. The National Commission on Human Rights says 23 other
\npeople are still missing, and has called on the government to
\nfollow its finding up.<\/p>\n
The four other activists to be tried along with Budiman are
\nSuroso, Ignatius Pranowo, Jakobus Eko Kurniawan and Garda
\nSembiring of the Indonesian Students Solidarity for Democracy, an
\naffiliate of the PRD.<\/p>\n
All five suspects are being detained at the Attorney General's
\nOffice.<\/p>\n
According to Sukarata, the presiding judge for Budiman's case
\nis Sjoffinan Sumantri, while the panel of judges trying Garda
\nSembiring will be led by Judge Madnjono Widiatmadja. Judge Asmar
\nIsmail will be heading the panel trying Suroso, Ignatius Pranowo
\nand Jakobus Eko Kurniawan.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the state prosecutors had also filed a dossier on
\nMuchtar Pakpahan, leader of the unrecognized Indonesian
\nProsperous Labor Union, and on four other PRD members with the
\nSouth Jakarta District Court. The date for the trials has yet to
\nbe determined. All of them are being charged with subversion.<\/p>\n
Budiman and his friends will be defended by the Defense Team
\nof the Indonesian Law and Justice, led by Abdul Hakim Garuda
\nNusantara, while Pakpahan will be defended by a team of lawyers
\nfrom his union.<\/p>\n
In a press report yesterday, Budiman said he and his friends
\nhad no idea yet what charges had been brought against them.<\/p>\n
\"I've asked the interrogating prosecutors about it during the
\ninterrogation, but I got no answer,\" Budiman told visiting
\nmembers of the human rights commission, as quoted by Republika.<\/p>\n
Budiman said almost 95 percent of the interrogation's focus
\nwas centered on the content of his organization's political
\nmanifesto, rather than on his alleged role in the riots. (08)<\/p>",
