Budget for public order raids raised<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Council's factions approved on Monday the
\nadministration's proposal to increase the current budget for
\npublic order operations from Rp 38 billion (US$4.2 million) to Rp
\n41 billion.<\/p>\n
The factions delivered their general views over a revised
\nbudget proposed by the city administration last week.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan)
\nurged the administration to use the funds to increase
\ncompensation for becak (pedicab) drivers.<\/p>\n
Faction spokesman Mustaman urged the administration to
\nincrease to Rp 400,000 from the current Rp 250,000 the
\ncompensation payment for each becak handed over by the driver to
\nthe administration.<\/p>\n
\"We also demanded that the administration should carry out
\npublic order raids more humanely,\" said Mustaman.<\/p>\n
Thousands of pedicab drivers staged rallies at least twice in
\nfront of PDI Perjuangan's headquarters on Jl. Pecenongan last
\nweek to ask the party's help in stopping the operations against
\nbecak.<\/p>\n
In the last rally, the drivers even returned their party
\nmembership cards to the headquarters since it seemed to them that
\nthe party did not care about their demands. (jun)<\/p>",
