Genuine Bridges that enhance lives<\/p>\n
The scene is the village of Leuwi Karet in Bogor regency on
\nNov. 14, 2001. The event is the inauguration of a brand new vital
\npiece of infrastructure for the isolated village.<\/p>\n
"For years we have been expecting this kind of bridge, because
\npreviously we had to use one made of coconut wood and bamboo.
\nThanks to Indocement, we can now reach Citeureup market in just
\n10 minutes. It used to be more than one hour," said Eman, a
\nsenior village resident.<\/p>\n
That is one of the many benefits given by the 50-meter long
\nbridge built by the country's second largest cement producer, PT
\nIndocement Tunggal Prakarsa Tbk, which spent Rp 600 million on
\nits construction.<\/p>\n
Not only does the bridge link and shorten the distance between
\nthe villages of Leuwi Karet and Tajur, it also provides the
\nresidents greater access to the outside world, thus boosting both
\ntheir social and business activities.<\/p>\n
The Leuwi Karet bridge and its connecting roads illustrate one
\nrecent example out of numerous other life-improving projects
\nprovided by Indocement to prove their true commitment and concern
\nto community development.<\/p>\n
Many kinds of bridges and roads have been built by Indocement:
\nConcrete and steel bridges and asphalt roads that give the
\nsurrounding community easier access and a smoother path to
\nenhance their quality of life. These bridges and roads refer to
\nthe company's sincere efforts in providing care to various
\naspects of life in the community, such as health, education,
\nsocio-religious and cultural, as well as economic empowerment.<\/p>\n
This bonding of relationship with the community and its
\ndevelopment has been continuous since PT Indocement Tunggal
\nPrakarsa Tbk first operated in 1985. It further indicates the
\ncompany's consistent attitude in maintaining the values of good
\ncorporate citizenship by not letting its community development
\nmission remain merely a slogan.<\/p>\n
On the health aspect, a 24-hour emergency clinic has been made
\navailable. Mobile health service units visit the villages
\naccording to the daily schedules. During outbreaks of disease,
\nrequired vaccination and vitamins are provided. Circumcision for
\nthe villages' boys usually take place on the company's
\nanniversary. To increase the villagers awareness on matters
\nconcerning hygiene and health care, regular meetings are held.
\nCleft lips plastic surgery and cataract operations are frequently
\nexecuted.<\/p>\n
On the education side, in line with the company's Foster
\nChildren program, it has provided donations for thousands of
\nstudents. Scholarships have also been given to hundreds of
\nstudents, including university students. Recently, 34 students of
\nGadjah Mada University have also been awarded such scholarships.
\nSchool buildings are renovated and reconstructed and new ones are
\nbuilt. The latest are two junior high schools that have been
\nbuilt in the villages of Puspanegara and Bantarjati in Citeureup
\ndistrict. Training schools are also available to enhance the
\ntechnical skills among villagers.<\/p>\n
As for religious and cultural aspects, village mosques have
\nbeen restored and funds for maintenance provided. Donations to
\nthe needy are regularly given. Sufficient numbers of cows or
\nbuffalo for sacrifice are provided by the company on certain
\nIslamic religious days. The company also provides prizes and
\nother assistance for Qur'an reciting competitions. Routine
\nmeetings are held with both formal and informal village leaders
\nto get a better understanding of local issues. Funds for
\ncelebrating Independence Day are also given.<\/p>\n
The communities' economic empowerment refers to Indocement's
\nefforts to establish small-scale businesses, such as the
\nconstruction of pavement blocks, and providing training and
\nsupport in its marketing. Certain spare parts for the plant's
\nequipment at highly set standards are also purchased from local
\nshops. Members of the company's workforce for construction and
\ncleaning services, as well as in the packing and loading
\ndepartment, come from the villages. Training in agriculture is
\nalso provided, which includes technical guidelines to improve
\ncrops and the provision of related seeds.<\/p>\n
Drainage construction and rehabilitation are also on the list,
\nalong with providing a clean water supply by building deep wells
\nand pipelines.<\/p>\n
Security is also covered by the company, as it provides funds
\nfor the salaries of the village security personnel plus their
\nuniforms.<\/p>\n
Environment and health are other matters of prime concern to
\nIndocement.<\/p>\n
"At Indocement we treat each issue with equal seriousness,
\nincluding those related to safety, health and the environment. We
\nhave recently added state-of-the-art equipment -- costing US$10
\nmillion -- to our modern plant to minimize dust emissions even
\nfurther," said Oivind Hoidalen, the company's technical director.<\/p>\n
He was referring to Electrostatic Precipitators, consisting of
\nsophisticated filters, which now reduces the dust emission to a
\nmuch lower level than the newly required standard of 50 mg\/cubic
\nmeter. The company has also been successful in reducing the dust
\nfall and for the past three years, since 1999, has managed to
\nkeep it much below the required government standard of 10 tons
\nper square kilometer.<\/p>\n
At Indocement, the Safety, Health and Environment Management
\nSystem (SHEMS), is an internal organization that, just like its
\nname, oversees and strictly supervises relevant issues both
\nwithin and outside the company.<\/p>\n
Safety Program and Facilities include policies and rules,
\ntraining, planned inspection and maintenance, accident\/incident
\ninvestigation and analysis, safety audit and personal as well as
\ngroup communications.<\/p>\n
A health program and related facilities cover pre-placement
\nand periodical checkups, ergonomic treatment, health promotion
\nand education, diagnoses and treatment, rehabilitation and
\ncompensation.<\/p>\n
Environmental programs and facilities comprise hazard control
\nof the air through the Blue Sky program and of noise through the
\nHearing Conservation Program. Hazard monitoring is also conducted
\non the acceptable levels of noise, heat, dust, drinking water and
\nwaste water.<\/p>\n
Measurement and achievement charts are regularly made to see
\nhow all these programs are performing.<\/p>\n
For the Safety Program, for instance, the frequency and
\nseverity rates are being significantly reduced. The chart for the
\nHealth Program on the occurrence of various diseases indicate a
\npattern lower than the set national standard.<\/p>\n
Through all these efforts, Indocement is preparing for another
\ngoal to crown their achievement this year: the ISO 14000.<\/p>\n
That will certainly be a feather in their cap, but this major
\nproducer of 15.8 million tons of cement annually, currently with
\n12 plants (nine in Citeureup and two in Palimanan, West Java,
\nplus one in Tarjun, South Kalimantan) takes greater pride in
\nbuilding countless "Bridges of Welfare" that contribute to the
\nlives of both its 6,600 employees, as well as more than 100,000
\npeople in its vicinity.<\/p>",
