Denpasar (ANTARA) - Indonesia\u2019s National Cyber and Crypto Agency\n(BSSN) has stressed the importance of data protection amid rising cyber\nthreats that can target a range of electronic systems, including\ncritical national infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cCyberspace has now become an arena for global competition and has\nchanged the landscape of geopolitical relations,\u201d BSSN Deputy Chief\nPolice Commissioner General Albertus Rachmad Wibowo said at Bali Tech\nWeek in Denpasar, Bali, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He explained that cyberattacks are no longer constrained by\ngeographic boundaries and can be carried out remotely, without the\nperpetrators being physically present.<\/p>\n
Society\u2019s growing reliance on digital technology has made the\nsecurity of electronic systems an increasingly complex challenge.\nAccording to him, cyberattacks can exploit vulnerabilities in\ninterconnected systems.<\/p>\n
The consequences are not limited to disruption of electronic devices;\nthey can also spread to supply chains and economic activity.<\/p>\n
Rachmad cited reports of attacks on Internet of Things (IoT) devices\nin Europe, including refrigerators. Although the targeted devices may\nseem simple, disruptions could affect supply chains and cause losses\nwhen food spoils.<\/p>\n
He warned that no electronic system is completely immune to attack.\nSecurity must therefore be implemented in layers, from policies,\nprocedures and security awareness to physical safeguards, perimeter\ndefence, network and device security, application security and data\nprotection.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo system is 100 per cent secure. The only secure system is one that\nis switched off. So, a system is secure if it is turned off,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Rachmad identified data as one of the most important elements of\ncybersecurity. Data is not only a source of information for\ndecision-making; it can also be misused if it falls into the wrong\nhands.<\/p>\n
He said sensitive data is still being stored or exchanged without\nencryption, leaving it readable as plain text. This is a concern as the\ngovernment continues to integrate data across ministries and\nagencies.<\/p>\n
According to Rachmad, protection must cover the entire data\nlifecycle: when data is stored (at rest), transmitted (in transit) and\nprocessed (in use).<\/p>\n
One measure that can be taken is to strengthen the use of\ncryptography. This technology helps protect the confidentiality and\nintegrity of information, verify who is authorised to access data, and\nsupport accountability in digital information exchanges.<\/p>\n
Alongside threats to systems, Rachmad highlighted the risk of\npersonal data being misused, particularly data relating to children.<\/p>\n
Drawing on his experience as Director of Cyber Crime Investigation at\nthe National Police\u2019s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim\nPolri), he said the hacking of data on a child\u2019s mobile phone had\npreviously caused serious harm to the victim.<\/p>\n
