S'pore defends self against bombs<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE: Singapore said on Friday it has further tightened
\nalready strict security measures to defend itself against deadly
\nbomb attacks, such as the ones that rocked the nearby Indonesian
\nresort island of Bali last month.<\/p>\n
Wong Kan Seng, a minister of state for home affairs, said on
\nFriday that since the Bali bombings, Singapore police have begun
\npatrolling bars, shops and office buildings, regarded as softer
\ntargets than the embassies, factories and airports local police
\nfocused on after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.<\/p>\n
At immigration checkpoints, police will implement more
\nstringent checks, and will now train all security guards to
\nhandle bomb threats, Wong said.<\/p>\n
The city-state has been working hard to defend its reputation
\nas an oasis of calm in an often-turbulent region. Singapore
\nauthorities have detained dozens of men over the past year,
\nsaying they are part of a terror group called Jamaah Islamiyah

MALAYSIA: Five men who are facing the death penalty for alleged
\ninvolvement in the kidnap-slaying of the second wife of a

Mat Saad Mat Isa, a farmer, Sabarudin Non, a carpenter, and J.
\nManimaran, a fisherman, have been charged with the murder of
\nHazliza Ishak, 26, a former model and aspiring actress.<\/p>\n
Hazliza was the second wife of 62-year-old Raja Jaafar Raja
\nMuda Musa, who is second in line to take over as sultan of
\nMalaysia's Perak state.<\/p>\n
An employee at Raja Jaafar's palace, Aristonsjah Tengku
\nMohamad Ansany, and Rahim Ismail, unemployed, are both accused of

High Court Judge V.T. Singham fixed Nov. 8 to hear the case

THAILAND: Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Friday
\nordered an investigation into letter-bombs sent to Myanmar
\nembassies in Japan, Malaysia and Singapore in the past week that

Myanmar's embassy in Singapore called in the city state's bomb
\nsquad on Wednesday to destroy a letter containing a small
\ndetonator that was posted from Thailand.<\/p>\n
Similar letters turned up in the post at Myanmar's diplomatic
\nmissions in Japan and Malaysia, prompting Myanmar authorities to
\nblame what they called dissident terrorist groups of exiles
\nliving outside the military-ruled state.<\/p>\n

The shootings follow a series of bomb attacks in Zamboanga
