        "content": "<p>Brunei cracks down on polluters<\/p>\n<p>BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (AFP): Brunei has beefed up laws governing<br>\nopen burning and pollution to check the spread of forest and bush<br>\nfires raging in the oil-rich sultanate.<\/p>\n<p>The stiffer laws included the introduction of jail sentences<br>\nand fines for an \"unlimited amount\", said Brunei's Minister of<br>\nLaw Pengiran Bahrin, who had announced tougher measures Monday to<br>\ndeal with the smoky haze that enveloped the tiny kingdom and<br>\nforced the closure of schools.<\/p>\n<p>He said those guilty of open burning faced fines of up to<br>\n100,000 Brunei dollars (US$62,500) while those who pollute the<br>\natmosphere or endanger human life or property face an \"unlimited<br>\namount\" in fines and jail of up to five years under the new<br>\nEmergency Penal Code.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, people who committed open burning were fined less<br>\nthan $2,000.<\/p>",
