The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (Balai Besar TNBTS)\nis adopting a firebreak strategy to hold back a forest fire that\ncontinues to spread across the Mount Bromo area. The move comes after\nflames from the Bantengan Block began creeping towards the savanna.<\/p>\n
As of Tuesday, 4 August 2026, a joint team was still struggling to\nextinguish the fire affecting the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park\narea. Steep terrain, parched vegetation and gusts of wind remain the\nmain challenges in the suppression effort.<\/p>\n
Endrip Wahyutama, Public Relations Officer at the TNBTS Authority,\nsaid the fire points previously located in the Bantengan Block and\nJantur in Lumajang Regency have now moved downhill towards the savanna\nof Mount Bromo.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe latest report from the field team is that the fire is about to\nspread into the savanna,\u201d Endrip said when met at the TNBTS Authority\noffice on Jalan Raden Intan, Malang City, on Tuesday (4\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
To prevent the blaze from spreading further into other areas, the\nTNBTS Authority is creating firebreaks at several points deemed\nvulnerable to the passage of flames.<\/p>\n
The firebreaks are made by clearing or cutting vegetation along the\nfire\u2019s path, creating empty spaces that can impede its spread.<\/p>\n
Endrip explained that the firebreaks being built range from five to\nten metres in width.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo keep the affected area from expanding, we are creating firebreaks\nfive to ten metres wide,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to him, the method is one of the important steps in forest\nfire control, particularly during the dry season when vegetation is dry\nand highly flammable.<\/p>\n
Beyond building firebreaks, the joint team is also carrying out\ndirect suppression using the \u2018gebyok\u2019 method and jet shooter equipment\nto reduce the fire\u2019s intensity on the ground.<\/p>\n
Endrip said the combination of methods has so far been considered\nfairly effective in slowing the fire\u2019s spread.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo far, the firebreaks have been quite effective, alongside\nsuppression using the gebyok system assisted by jet shooters,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
