A nuclear-powered submarine of the British Royal Navy has arrived in\nthe Arabian Sea with the capability to launch strikes against Iran if\nwar tensions escalate. Military sources indicate that the HMS Anson\nsubmarine is able to launch cruise missile attacks.<\/p>\n
According to detikNews citing the Daily Mail on Sunday (22\/3\/2026),\nHMS Anson is equipped with land-attack Tomahawk Block IV missiles with a\nrange of 1,000 miles and heavy Spearfish torpedoes. It departed from the\nport in Perth on 6 March. The nuclear submarine is believed to have\ntaken up position in the deep waters of the northern Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n
British forces thus possess the capability to launch strikes against\nIran if the conflict intensifies further. This news emerges after\nDowning Street stated that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has\napproved US permission to use British bases to launch attacks on Iranian\nsites targeting the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n
Previously, Starmer had permitted US forces to use the bases only for\ndefensive operations to prevent Iran from firing missiles that endanger\nBritish interests or lives. However, he has now approved an expansion of\ntargets to help protect ships in shipping lanes based on \u2018collective\nself-defence\u2019.<\/p>\n
Referring to defence sources at PJHQ, the Chief of Joint Operations,\nLieutenant General Nick Perry, would issue firing orders if authorised\nby the Prime Minister. HMS Anson would then rise close to the surface\nand launch a salvo of four missiles.<\/p>\n
This advanced submarine, based in Faslane, Scotland, does not have a\nstandard periscope. Instead, it displays the surface view on a large\ntelevision screen.<\/p>\n
With its nuclear reactor, the submarine does not need to refuel for\n25 years. Meanwhile, its ability to purify water and air means the\nsubmarine can circumnavigate the planet without needing to surface.<\/p>\n
However, the submarine\u2019s capabilities are limited by its food\nsupplies, which last three months for 98 officers and crew members.<\/p>\n
One source said, \u201cAnson will hide quietly. The Prime Minister and the\nCommander of Maritime Operations will be informed of the submarine\u2019s\nlocation, and of course the Submarine Service\u2014but its location will not\nbe widely known.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Navy can quickly position the submarine and then leave it there\nfor weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf necessary, the submarine will operate silently, so no showers, no\nflushing toilets, and many people bathing in one tub of water. The smell\nwill be very pungent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence refused to comment on the location\nof HMS Anson. A spokesperson said: \u201cWe will not provide details on\ncurrent operations or specific deployments.\u201d<\/p>\n
