British Council celebrates 50th jubilee<\/p>\n
The British Council celebrates 50 years in Indonesia this year
\nand will be marked with several events.<\/p>\n
Most immediate is the \"Sign-up Sessions\" planned for five
\ncities -- Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya and Bali --
\nbeginning June 13 and June 14 in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
It features Fast Track processing for admission to educational
\ninstitutions in Britain, particularly for over 400 scholarships.
\nThe emphasis being Britain is doing all it can during the
\nmonetary crisis to help with Britain offering 20 percent to 60
\npercent less in costs to students.<\/p>\n
Also in June is a British Film Week and an English Language
\nTeaching Conference in Malang.<\/p>\n
A Photographic Exhibition is September will feature Europeans
\nin Asia and Asians in Europe.<\/p>\n
Shakespeare's play The Comedy of Errors will be brought to
\nJakarta in November by the Watermill Theater.<\/p>\n
Other British Council activities have included:<\/p>\n
* An Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded contract (US$4.2
\nmillion), which commenced January 1997 to develop the English
\nlanguage capacity of 14 lead universities, mainly in eastern
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
* The British Chevening Awards in 1997, which attracted 5,000
\napplications for about 70 places.<\/p>\n
* Management of the training of some 300 Indonesians in Britain,
\nunder various contracts to the British and Indonesian governments
\nincluded funding by the World Bank and the ADB.<\/p>\n
* Professional support for the development of environmental
\neducation centers in East Java and South Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
* Two thousand trainees underwent English training at the British
\nCouncil's Language Center in 1996. Clients included banks,
\nindustrial and commercial concerns, hotels, airlines, teachers,
\nnurses and many government officials. This is a full-cost
\nrecovery activity generating a turnover of over 750,000 per
\nannum.<\/p>\n
* The Jakarta library has 9,000 members, with an average of 250
\npeople visiting daily. On-line access to the Internet and other
\ndatabase is now established. The Surabaya Center has 2,000
\nmembers and hosts a wide range of seminars and other activities.<\/p>\n
* The Kosh dance and drama group toured in December 1996; 900
\nstudents attended one performance at Petra University, Surabaya.<\/p>\n
* Senior educationalists developing an accreditation system for
\nall higher education undertook a special study tour to the U.K.
\nin April 1997.<\/p>\n
* On-going research links, funded through a DFID grant, include
\nfisheries technology in Semarang, tropical peat forestry in
\nKalimantan, regional planning for Bali, development of
\nagricultural entrepreneurs in Sulawesi and West Java and public
\nhealth in Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
The British Council also opened five Indonesian-British
\nEducation Centers in major cities in Java and Sumatra. These are
\nproviding assistance and study opportunities in Britain to large
\nnumbers of students.<\/p>",
