BritCham at a glance<\/p>\n
The British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesian, or BritCham,
\nhas operated here under various guises since the early 1970s.<\/p>\n
It began with a modest start approximately 30 years ago, as an
\ninitiative of the then Ambassador Sir John Ford, to facilitate
\ninformal gatherings of British businesspeople at the Indonesian
\nPetroleum Club.<\/p>\n
In September 1975, it was notarized as an association
\nrepresenting British business interests in Indonesia and quickly
\nevolved into a serious business organization.<\/p>\n
In recognition of its role in the Indonesian business
\ncommunity, an extraordinary general meeting of members of the
\nthen Indonesian British Business Association (IBBA) decided by
\nunanimous vote in December 1998 to transform IBBA into a Chamber
\nof Commerce.<\/p>\n
As a result, the British Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia came
\ninto being on April 1, 1999.<\/p>\n
The chamber, which has as a tagline of \"facilitating trade and
\ninvestment between Indonesian and Britain\", is supported by a
\nfull-time professional secretariat with an office in the World
\nTrade Center, 8th floor, in Jl. Jend. Sudirman Kav. 31, Jakarta.<\/p>\n
It enjoys a current membership of over 460 persons, including
\nthe vast majority of British firms operating in Indonesia as well
\nas Indonesian members who have commercial links with Britain.<\/p>\n
Members can get information on forthcoming meetings and events
\nthrough the chamber's monthly magazine Up.date and its website
\nwww.britcham.or.id.<\/p>\n
BritCham corporate members include Standard Chartered
\nBank, Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, Rolls-Royce, ICI,
\nBritish Petroleum, Balfour Beatty, British American Tobacco, BOC
\nGases, British Gas, British Aerospace, British Airways, Jardine
\nMatheson, Cable&Wireless, Cadbury Schweppes, Courtaulds, Costain,
\nRoyal Doulton, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, The Body Shop,
\nPowergen, GEC, Prudential Assurance, Reckitt & Colman, Reuters,
\nSecuricor, Taylor-Woodrow, Thames Water and Unilever.<\/p>\n
Membership offers benefits such as opportunities to
\nparticipate in a range of sector or issue groups, including
\naerospace and defense; insurance, banking and capital markets;
\ncross-sector group on human resources, energy, healthcare,
\ninfrastructure, manufacturing and retail; and hospitality.<\/p>\n
In addition, members receive invitations to monthly breakfast
\nand lunch meetings at which speakers address subjects of current
\ninterest to the business community.<\/p>\n
These meetings involve keynote speakers from the Indonesian
\nCabinet and government, international financial institutions,
\nuniversities, local political advisers, British media
\nrepresentatives and the local business community, as well as
\nvisiting business leaders and ministers\/politicians from the
