Bripka Hana Heriyana utilised waste to create economic value for\nresidents of Tegal Maja Village, Serang, Banten, during her tenure as a\ncommunity police officer. Bripka Hana encouraged villagers to process\nbuffalo dung and paper waste into handicraft bags.<\/p>\n
Bripka Hana has been nominated by several villagers for the Hoegeng\nAwards 2026. Rini, a staff member at Tegal Maja Village, described\nBripka Hana as an innovative figure close to the community during her\ntime as a community police officer.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe is excellent, blends in with the community here, responsive,\ninnovative, creative\u2014basically, Mr Hana participates in all village\nactivities,\u201d Rini told detikcom on Tuesday (10\/3\/2026).<\/p>\n
Rini explained that one of Bripka Hana\u2019s programmes involved\nprocessing cow dung into compost fertiliser. She noted that the cow dung\nhad previously been a complaint among villagers due to it being\nscattered around the environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cBuffalo dung is scattered everywhere, so they tried to turn it into\nfertiliser. Farmers are given sacks, valued at around Rp5,000 per dry\nsack, then processed by adding dry straw and various other things,\nground, and fermented,\u201d Rini said.<\/p>\n
Rini stated that this programme has improved the villagers\u2019 economy.\nOn the other hand, the environment has become cleaner from buffalo\ndung.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt damages the roads too, scattered everywhere, but since the\nprogramme started, alhamdulillah, people compete to collect it; it\u2019s\npiled up on the sides and gathered, so thankfully it\u2019s quite clean now,\u201d\nshe said.<\/p>\n
The compost fertiliser processing site is near the village head\u2019s\nhouse. Currently, there are 5 workers at the compost processing\nfacility.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are 4-5 people managing it, and for the community (sellers),\nit\u2019s anyone with buffalo livestock. They deliver it. Actually, it\u2019s the\nwomen, so it\u2019s quite helpful for extra income to buy chillies,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Additionally, Bripka Hana encouraged villagers to utilise paper waste\nfrom a local factory to create handicraft bags. This programme was\nproposed by the village head and supported by Bripka Hana.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe paper waste is from a PT in our village; it used to be\ndiscarded, then they tried making crafts like bags. We provided training\nfirst, and eventually, our villagers could do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Bripka Hana usually assists in marketing these paper handicraft bag\nproducts. Around 30 villagers are involved in this handicraft group.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there\u2019s an exhibition or sale, Mr Hana informs us, \u2018Bu Rini,\nthere\u2019s an order for this.\u2019 Our cheapest product is Rp35,000, and for\nbranded-style bags, Rp800,000 to Rp1.5 million,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Bripka Hana was transferred in December 2025. She now serves as a\nsergeant in Unit 3 of the Intelligence and Security Division at Serang\nPolice Resort.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe programmes are still running because even though Mr Hana has\nmoved to the police resort, he still contributes; he still visits here\nand helps,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Utilising Waste to Boost Villagers\u2019 Economy<\/p>\n
Previously, Bripka Hana was one of the candidates nominated for the\nHoengeng Corner programme 2025. Bripka Hana created the compost\nfertiliser and paper bag handicraft programmes because waste issues were\na major concern for villagers.<\/p>\n
Bripka Hana served as the community police officer in Tegalmaja\nVillage for 3 years. Upon starting her duties, Hana observed that most\nvillagers owned buffalo livestock. This caused problems because the\nbuffalo dung disrupted residents\u2019 comfort.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt started from environmental issues, so there was some friction in\nthe neighbourhood between those who have buffalo and those who don\u2019t;\nresidents without livestock complained about the smell and it dirtying\nthe environment,\u201d Hana said in an interview with detikcom on Tuesday\n(11\/11\/2025).<\/p>\n
Hana brainstormed ways to address the villagers\u2019 problems. She\neventually proposed to the village head to utilise the cow dung as\ncompost fertiliser.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlhamdulillah, the village head shares my vision; we turned the\nexisting social conflict in the environment into a productive product,\nespecially for the community,\u201d Hana said.<\/p>\n
The compost fertiliser processing has been running for one year. Hana\nalso invited unemployed villagers to participate in making the\ncompost.<\/p>\n
Hana buys buffalo dung from villagers at Rp5,000 per sack. The dung\nis then mixed with other raw materials to become compost fertiliser.<\/p>\n
\u201cInitially, it\u2019s collected from the community to us; we value it at\nRp5,000 per sack, we receive it then enter the production process. We\naccept from the community with the condition that the raw material is\nalready dry,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe production starts with grinding, mixed with other raw materials\nlike rice bran, straw, molasses, and agricultural lime. After grinding,\nwe ferment for 2 weeks, then package it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
After production is complete, the compost is packaged in 10 kg sacks\nfor Rp20,000, standard 1 kg plastic packaging for Rp10,000, and premium\n1 kg compost for Rp20,000.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur monthly turnover varies, but alhamdulillah, from opening until\nnow, we\u2019ve sold more than 30 tonnes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Creating Handicraft Bags from Paper Waste<\/p>\n
Bripka Hana also utilised factory paper waste into handicrafts. She\ncollaborated with women in Tegalmaja Village to make bags from that\npaper waste material.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also have a craft group, again from company paper waste. So it\u2019s\nutilised; we help with marketing and raw material selection. For the\nworkers, we direct it to women, housewives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
This handicraft has been ongoing for 3 years. Hana initially\ncontacted the company together with the village head to utilise the\nwaste.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe raw material wasn\u2019t noticed by anyone; it was just discarded by\nthe company. So we thought, why not utilise the leftover waste,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
