Bringing order to the communications sector<\/p>\n
People are watching with interest how the financial problems
\nprevailing at two of our airlines, Sempati Air and Merpati
\nNusantara Airlines (MNA), are being handled. People are closely
\nwatching developments in the communications sector because of its
\nstrategic position, both in our national development efforts and
\nin our international transactions.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's domestic market is the fifth largest in the world
\nand the majority of consumers are relatively young, which means a
\ncomparatively constant pattern of demand. In addition, Indonesia
\nis a vast country, with three different time zones. It is
\ntherefore not surprising that some of our neighboring countries
\nare trying to make ours their economic hinterland.<\/p>\n
It has to be admitted that our communications sector must bear
\nits share in our present current account deficit, which includes
\nan entry for services such as communication and travel. Our
\nweakness in the national shipping subsector is conspicuous. The
\nsame is true for our air communications subsector. Certainly, it
\nwould be sad to learn that our national airlines must become
\nmerely an alternative means of transport and communication.<\/p>\n
Unless all these weaknesses are surmounted, we will only reap
\nlimited benefits from the presence of foreign investors. We need
\nmotivation to lead in free competition. We are putting our hopes
\nin Sempati Air and MNA.<\/p>\n
