The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is focusing on\nencouraging and strengthening the transformation of the role of\nuniversities to become centres for solutions and innovations relevant to\nthe needs of society and the industrial world.<\/p>\n
Speaking in Makassar on Tuesday, the Head of BRIN, Arif Satria,\nemphasised the importance of transforming the role of higher education\nwithin the national innovation ecosystem. He noted that universities\nshould not merely serve as educational institutions producing\nhigh-quality graduates, but must also act as epicentres for innovations\nthat meet the demands of the public and industry.<\/p>\n
To support this objective, BRIN is introducing various collaborative\nprogrammes, including research funding schemes, \u2018Degree by Research\u2019\ninitiatives, student research internships, Research Assistant roles, and\ninternational researcher and academic mobility programmes. \u201cThe\ntransformation of universities is necessary; they must evolve from being\nmerely teaching universities to research universities, and ultimately\ninto innovation universities capable of producing real solutions for the\nneeds of society, industry, and the government,\u201d said Arif.<\/p>\n
Overall, BRIN\u2019s policy direction asserts that the future of\nIndonesian research depends heavily on the strength of multi-stakeholder\ncollaboration, particularly between BRIN and universities. This synergy\nis expected to produce superior talent, accelerate the downstreaming of\ninnovation, increase national competitiveness, and establish research\nand innovation as the primary foundation for Indonesia\u2019s sustainable\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
The Rector of Hasanuddin University (Unhas), Prof.\u00a0Dr Jamaluddin\nJompa, stated that BRIN and Unhas share a strategic vision to utilise\nresearch as an impactful instrument for development. Various\ncollaborations between Unhas and BRIN have already been established in\nstrategic fields, ranging from archaeology, biodiversity, and maritime\nstudies to health, material development, and biomass, all of which\nsupport the national green economy and bioeconomy agendas.<\/p>\n
Similarly, the Rector of Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI), Prof.\u00a0Dr\nHambali Thalib, remarked that universities must be more than just places\nof learning; they must be centres for solutions. He explained that UMI\ndoes not wish to merely produce graduates with degrees, but rather to\nproduce solutions.
