Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing an early warning system for floods and erosion, targeting deployment by the end of 2026 to help vulnerable communities in Sumatra prevent disaster-related casualties. The initiative includes deployment of drones equipped with ground-penetrating radar and water purification systems to support disaster response efforts.

“We are currently preparing research on how to develop an early
warning system for floods and erosion,” Head of BRIN Arif Satria said
here on Tuesday.

Satria revealed that an early warning system for floods is urgently
needed, especially for disaster mitigation efforts to prevent casualties
in the future.

“So far, floods and erosion often come suddenly without warning, and
in the future, we hope to have an early warning system,” he
remarked.

He stated that research on the early warning system for floods and
erosion began in 2026.

“Hopefully, by the end of 2026, we will already have early warning
system technology for floods and erosion,” Satria said.

It is known that the early warning system for floods and erosion is
one of BRIN’s research projects that will later be handed over to
communities vulnerable to disasters in Sumatra.

Previously, BRIN had sent several units of ready-to-drink water
(Arsinum) machines to help communities in Sumatra access safe drinking
water.

In addition, BRIN has deployed unmanned aircraft or drones equipped
with Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) to support reconstruction and
evacuation processes.

This advanced technology is capable of detecting objects at depths of
up to 100 meters below the ground surface, thereby assisting in the
search for victims and mapping soil conditions in landslide-prone
areas.

Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian previously affirmed that his
side will expedite data collection to ensure assistance is delivered on
time to disaster survivors in Sumatra.

Karnavian emphasized that speed in the data collection process is
crucial to ensure that the distribution of aid is not hampered. The
government has prepared various assistance schemes to support disaster
survivors, including housing repair assistance and living cost
support.

Related news: BRIN ensures drinkable water for evacuees in
Sumatra

Related news: Bali sets up flood alarms at six high-risk locations in
Denpasar

Related news: BMKG builds dual command centers to strengthen disaster
warning system

Translator: Sean, Kenzu
",
